Candles are an essential element of the Leipzig Festival of Lights – they illuminate the large candles' podium '89, which at times lights up Augustusplatz (large Festivals of Lights) and at other times St Nicolas Church Yard (small Festivals of Lights). The candle podium is traditionally filled with tea lights in candle holders by the visitors of the Leipzig Festival of Lights. These are handed out free of charge or in exchange for a voluntary donation at the numerous information stands in Leipzig’s city centre.

The proceeds from the donations support a good cause determined in advance by the advisory board “Kuratorium Tag der Peaceful Revolution 1989”.

In 2025, the proceeds from the candle donations will support the socio-cultural centre “Die VILLA”, which has been committed to education, culture and social participation in Leipzig since 1990.

The proceeds from the 2024 candle sponsorship campaign went to Wolfsträne e. V., an organisation dedicated to professional bereavement support for children.

The generous visitors of the Leipzig Festival of Lights 2023 became candle sponsors for EuropaMaidan Leipzig e. V., which collects donations for projects in Ukraine as well as for refugees and for Ukrainians who have remained in their country.

You can find out here who benefited from the proceeds in previous years.

The idea of candle sponsorship was successfully continued in 2021. Recipients of the proceeds collected before and during the Leipzig Festival of Lights 2021 were, in equal parts, Ariowitsch-Haus Leipzig e. V. and the Jewish Community of Halle.

The proceeds from the candle sponsor initiative as part of the Leipzig Festival of Lights 2020 were divided equally between Clowns & Clowns e. V. and the Leipzig hospital clowns. The associations are active in hospitals and care facilities. In addition to performing for sick children, a particular focus lies on working with older people.

Reusable cups at the Leipzig Festival of Lights

(Kopie 2)

The topic of sustainability is a key concern in the events industry and is also an important issue for the Leipzig Festival of Lights. To reduce plastic waste, the Leipzig Festival of Lights tested the use of reusable cups for the candles as early as 2023. On the 9ᵗʰ of October 2024, 20,000 reusable cups even completely replaced the disposable ones. The reusable cups were made from 100% recyclable, durable plastic by the company Relocal based in Chemnitz.
