Leipzig Festival of Lights 2014 programme
25 Years of the Peaceful Revolution
To mark the 25th anniversary of the Peaceful Revolution, the Leipzig Festival of Lights extended across the entire inner city ring of Leipzig for the first time. Along the historic demonstration route, light, sound and video projections, dance, performance and music created reflective and questioning connections between 1989 and 2014. Together with the artistic director Jürgen Meier and an artistic advisory board invited especially for this purpose, the organisers selected 15 internationally active artists and collectives. They, along with students from Leipzig and representatives of Leipzig’s independent arts scene, approached the events of autumn 1989 in very different artistic ways and translated the events, emotions and challenges of that time into the present day.
Along a distance of 3.6 kilometres, interaction became visible and tangible at more than 20 stations, turning visitors into participants. Over 600 accredited media representatives from 21 nations reported on this day from Leipzig directly to their home countries via print, TV, radio and online.
