The traditional candles' podium in the shape of the number 89 will once again be a central feature of the Leipzig Festival of Lights on the 9ᵗʰ of October 2026. This year, the candle display will be located at Thomaskirchhof / corner of Klostergasse. Throughout the evening, visitors can place tealights there, joining together to create a quiet symbol of remembrance of the Peaceful Revolution. The candles are available free of charge or for a voluntary donation at all candle and information stands in the city centre. This year, the proceeds from the candle donations will go to Haus Steinstraße e. V.
Haus Steinstraße e. V. is a Leipzig sociocultural centre, multigenerational centre and recognised independent youth welfare organisation. The association creates spaces for cultural education, social interaction and civic engagement. Through courses, workshops, theatre activities, holiday programmes and its family and community café, Haus Steinstraße brings together people from different generations, backgrounds and circumstances. Its work focuses on openness, respect, active involvement and participation — with the aim of making culture and education accessible to everyone.
