With the calls “We are the people” and “No violence”, 70,000 people gathered on the 9ᵗʰ of October 1989 to march around Leipzig’s inner city ring road in order to demonstrate for freedom and democracy, thereby paving the way to the fall of the Berlin Wall and to the unity of Germany and Europe. The dramatic events of autumn 1989 still move us today. Each year on the 9ᵗʰ of October, the Leipzig Festival of Lights commemorates the events of the Peaceful Revolution in autumn 1989 with artistic light installations.

Mappings, installations and performances – you will find all light projects from 2009 to 2025 here at a glance.
