Under the motto “Autumn ’89 – Awakening to Democracy”, the people of Leipzig and their guests marked the Leipzig Festival of Lights 2019 on the 9ᵗʰ of October – for many, the emotional highlight of the commemorations recalling the decisive Monday demonstration 30 years earlier. Around 75,000 visitors had accepted the invitation, following the opening of the Festival of Lights on Augustusplatz, to set off on foot around Leipzig’s inner-city ring road and experience numerous light installations along the historic demonstration route. Light, image and video material were projected onto façades along the approximately 3.6 km route. The film also presents the six light spaces, which had already attracted visitors with exciting events in the run-up to the 9ᵗʰ of October. Interviews with the participants round off the documentary and offer an insight into the participatory approach.
