A shared commemoration of the Peaceful Revolution 24 years after the 9ᵗʰ of October 1989 in Leipzig. As part of the Leipzig Festival of Lights 2013, around 30,000 visitors experienced a multifaceted artistic exploration under the motto “How are things? Via Prague!”. On Augustusplatz, the art and civic project Leipzig Festival of Lights addressed events in Czechia and Slovakia (Czechoslovakia until 1989), including the Prague Spring of 1968 and the occupation of the embassy by GDR refugees in Prague in 1989. Among the guests, Joachim Gauck, President of the Federal Republic of Germany, also honoured the Festival of Lights with his presence. Words of welcome were delivered by Leipzig’s Mayor Burkhard Jung and the Slovak actor Róbert Roth.
