Building bridges between Leipzig and Gdańsk
At the Leipzig Festival of Lights 2011, around 25,000 Leipzig residents and guests of the city commemorated the Peaceful Revolution and the autumn of ’89 on the 9ᵗʰ of October 2011. From 8 p.m. on Augustusplatz, they took part in particular in an artistic exploration of the themes of freedom, solidarity and civic engagement: A video performance as a large-scale projection onto the façade of Leipzig Opera combined contemporary perspectives with current and deeply moving historical photographic and film material from Gdańsk and Leipzig . The sequences were embedded in live links from a special concert in Gdańsk. Burkhard Jung, Mayor of the City of Leipzig, and Dr Marek Prawda, Ambassador of the Republic of Poland, reminded listeners in their welcoming addresses that the hard-won good of freedom must always be nurtured. At the same time, the participants in the Festival of Lights once again used thousands of candles to create an oversized illuminated “89”.
