On stage, around 140 pupils from Years 6 to 12 perform urban and contemporary dance styles. The performance combines powerful group tableaux with individual movements and free improvisations. This creates a succession of changing formations: large groups, individual dancers and symbolic marches of protest and remembrance.
In four thematic sections, the performance tells of the hopes of 1989, the experiences of the post-reunification period and current challenges facing democracy and social cohesion. It concludes by focusing on how freedom, diversity and community can be lived and protected today.
The stage features illuminated elements such as LED rods, lit stools and small photo lights. A flexible framework made of aluminium tubes defines the performance space, with individual surfaces used for projections. Stage lighting, projections and moving light patterns complement the dances. Individual words also appear in large letters on the projection surfaces: VALUES, COMMUNITY, EAST, WEST, UNITY, DIVERSITY, FRAGILE and SOLIDARITY.
The performance features spoken contributions by pupils, pre-recorded audio sequences and quotations on the theme of democracy. Some texts and video recordings are also shown on projection surfaces.
The main performances begin at 19:15, 20:30, 21:30 and 22:30 and each last approximately 30 minutes. Between them, the stage remains active with short dance interventions.
