What do we think today? What did we think back then? Gedankenspiegel  is an immersive tunnel installation that compares personal memories from 1989 with today’s perspectives. On a 15‑metre projection surface, a visual and acoustic dialogue between past and present unfolds above the heads of the visitors to the Leipzig Festival of Lights. At its centre are terms such as freedom, opinion or truth – they appear, transform and invite visitors to pause and reflect. Voices of people of different ages from all over Germany make the emotional and social tensions tangible.

About the local participation project

The Leipzig Festival of Lights has always placed a strong focus on participatory projects and the involvement of younger generations. A current example of this is the project Gedankenspiegel, which was jointly developed and realised by apprentices from Leipzig from various training years. During the preparation, the apprentices conducted numerous interviews. Thomas Ils, who accompanied the young people from the beginning as a mentor and trainer, made this project possible and provided significant support with the technical implementation.
