A picturesque circular route leads to the imposing Gnandstein Castle with breathtaking views, past historic castle towers in Kohren-Sahlis and through the idyllic Streitwald.

The hike begins at the foot of Gnandstein Castle and passes through the small rural village of Wüstenhain to Rüdigsdorf. Past the romantic Schwind Pavilion with the well-known frescoes by Moritz von Schwind. Along the babbling Mausbach stream, the hiker reaches the historic pottery town of Kohren-Sahlis with all its sights. Below the round towers – remnants of the Chorun castle complex – the route follows the former narrow-gauge railway path to the shelter hut, passing the summer toboggan run. Via the Rodaer church path, the way leads to Gnandstein. Gnandstein Castle with its 33-meter-high keep is clearly visible from afar. From here, there is a magnificent panoramic view of the Kohrener Land. The museum and restaurant invite guests to linger.

Directions

The circular hiking trail starts at Montottoner Platz (parking lot Kohren-Sahlis). From here, the path follows the former railway embankment past the medieval castle ruins of Chorun. It continues through the Streitwald to the shelter hut, passing the summer toboggan run. On Kirschallee, the path winds further to Gnandstein Castle, Saxony's best-preserved Romanesque castle. A visit to the museum and the 33 m high keep is highly recommended here. From there, you have a wonderful panoramic view of the Kohrener Land. Through the small village of Wüstenhain, the trail goes to Rüdigsdorf, passing the Schwind Pavilion and Rüdigsdorf church, returning again to Kohren-Sahlis. After about 7.7 km in total, you reach the starting point again at the Montottoner Platz parking lot.
