Lichtfest Leipzig 2022: begehbares Kaleidoskop "Das ICH und das WIR" von Betty Mü auf dem Burgplatz Leipzig

On the 9ᵗʰ of October 2022, Leipzig commemorated the Peaceful Revolution in the autumn of 1989 with the Leipzig Festival of Lights. The atmospheric film looks back at the three light projects “The I and the We” (Burgplatz, by Betty Mü, Germany), “Democracy Needs Colour – Spray Along” (Richard-Wagner-Platz by Cart’1 and Matthieu Tercieux, France) and “we see ourselves free” (Augustusplatz, by Robert Sochacki/Kollektiv noks, Poland). Artists have their say, as do visitors.

Vor dem Lichtfest Leipzig 2022: Beim Workshop zu Betty Müs Projekt „Das ICH und das WIR“ diskutierte die Künstlerin gemeinsam mit Leipziger Studierenden Fragestellungen

As part of the technical rehearsal, Betty Mü, designer and visual artist, explains the concept behind her walk-in kaleidoscope: the project on Burgplatz, entitled “The I and the WE”, explores the individual’s doubts and the power of the crowd, which holds the potential for change. The video offers a colourful, powerful impression of the inside of the kaleidoscope, which was on display on Burgplatz.

Vor dem Lichtfest 2022: Robert Sochacki und Wera Morawiec kamen im Juni nach Leipzig, um sich mit allen Projektbeteiligten abzustimmen und ausführliche Recherchen zu machen.

The Polish artist duo Robert Sochacki and Wera Morawiec involved several cultural practitioners from Leipzig in the project “we see ourselves free”. At the workshop at the end of June, there was an intensive exchange, and all the strands of the multi-part project “we see ourselves free” came together. In the interview with them, it becomes clear that eyes and (close) looking were the central elements of the project on Augustusplatz.

Die Franzosen Cart’1 (Streetartist) und Matthieux Tercieux (Programmierer) arbeiteten im Vorfeld des Lichtfest Leipzig 2022 mit Kindern und Jugendlichen

Cart’1 and Matthieux Tercieux worked with children and young people during the workshop. They were able to try out both classic spray-painting with spray cans and the Light Spray technique, a form of digital graffiti. In conversation, the French artists emphasised how important participation was to them in their project “Democracy needs colour – join in spraying!”, and invited visitors to the Festival of Lights to take part on Richard-Wagner-Platz.
