In 2020, everything was different. Instead of taking place with tens of thousands of visitors on Augustusplatz, the Festival of Lights 2020 was held on a small scale at St Nicolas Church Yard. However, to carry the light further into the city districts and to the people, the Festival of Lights had already visited four very special places in Leipzig in September, with numerous candles and an artistic programme. This short film offers an emotional look back at the preliminary events at the Leipzig-Plagwitz retirement home, St Georg Children’s Hospital, the Police Training College on Dübener Landstraße and the shared accommodation for refugees. In the film, these are framed by the greetings from the speakers on the 9ᵗʰ of October as well as musical impressions from St Nicolas Church Yard.

The fourth and final preliminary event for the 2020 Festival of Lights took place on 28 September in Leipzig-Connewitz at the communal accommodation for refugees. The former GDR civil rights activist Gisela Kallenbach was the guest. There was also a programme by the dance company human moves. Presented by: Claudius Nießen.

“Unity and justice and freedom” – the poetry slammers from Livelryx made direct reference to the motto of the 2020 Festival of Lights during the Festival of Lights visit on 14 September 2020 to the Police Training College on the premises of the riot police. Stephan Bickhardt, pastor and one of the protagonists of the Peaceful Revolution, answered questions from presenter Claudius Nießen at the start of the event.
