Impressions of the Festival of Lights 2022
Leipzig Festival of Lights concluded the commemorations of the Peaceful Revolution on Sunday evening, 9ᵗʰ of October. Three light installations by international artist teams, together with the traditional candles' podium '89 at St Nicolas Church Yard, had drawn numerous visitors to the city centre.
Workshop “we see ourselves free”
Robert Sochacki and Wera Morawiec came to Leipzig in June to coordinate with everyone involved in the project and carry out extensive research. Their discussion partners included musician and composer Marek Brandt, app developer Marc-André Weibezahn and Bernd Karwen from the Polish Institute. A guided tour of the Forum of Contemporary History was also on the agenda.
Workshop “The I and the We”
At the workshop on Betty Mü’s project “The I and the We”, the artist discussed questions with students from Leipzig, such as: What tasks do our societies face today? Does deglobalisation mean risk or opportunity? Why are individuals often reluctant to get involved? Technical rehearsals for the walk-in kaleidoscope completed the workshop.
Workshop “Democracy Needs Colour – Join in and Spray!”
The French artists Cart’1 (street artist) and Matthieux Tercieux (programmer) worked with children and young people in the run-up to the Festival of Lights. The workshop venues were HEIZHAUS and the open youth club “Völkerfreundschaft”, known as Völle, in Grünau. First, motifs were designed on paper; then graffiti was created in the classic way with spray cans and subsequently implemented digitally via Wii controller as “Light Spray”. A successful playful and artistic introduction to the project “Democracy Needs Colour – Join in and Spray!”, which brought great joy to everyone involved.
