In a sea of light, people from Leipzig appear on a monumental scale. They become visible as moving silhouettes on several translucent projection screens and the architecture behind them. The images overlap: bodies, light and projections create a spatial impression in which visitors move among the people portrayed.
Each of the people featured has contributed a personal movement in advance – a gesture they associate with freedom. Participants from different areas of Leipzig’s urban community, including school pupils, company employees and VILLA participants, are part of the installation. Dance experience is not essential: the focus is on individual movements and the diversity of human bodies.
Those who approach the projections encounter the movement contributors directly and hear their voices and the stories behind their movements. They also explain who they are, what they do in their everyday lives and what their personal movement means to them. As visitors walk through the installation, their own movements also become visible in the light. In this way, visitors themselves become part of the work.
