The traditional candle platform in the shape of an 89 will be located at St Thomas Church/corner of Klostergasse in 2026. Candles-89 provides a quiet moment of remembrance, as well as an opportunity for exchange. Presenter Nils Straatmann will engage in dialogue with contemporary witnesses . The discussion will cover, among other things, the much-debated question in autumn 1989: “stay or leave?”, hopes and fears, the significance of 9 October then and now, and topics such as media freedom, the environment and the Church.

The eyewitness discussions take place in cooperation with Frauenkultur e. V. Leipzig, the Leipzig branch of the Polish Institute Berlin, Archiv Bürgerbewegung Leipzig e. V., the Peaceful Revolution Foundation, St Nicholas Church Leipzig, Bildungswerk Sachsen of the Deutsche Gesellschaft e. V., as well as representatives of the civil rights movement.
Moderator: Nils Straatmann, born in 1989, lives in Leipzig. He is a poetry slammer and author, and presents radio programmes and podcasts.
