On Grimmaische Straße, the Civil Movement Archive Leipzig is presenting ten large-format photographs from 1989. Students taking an advanced history course at the Gerda-Taro School selected and commented on them as part of an archive education workshop. Alongside providing historical context, the central question was: How do the historical events of 1989 in Leipzig relate to the challenges of the present day? What inspiration can they offer?
Since 1991, the Civil Movement Archive Leipzig has collected personal accounts from the GDR opposition, the citizens’ movement and the initiatives and political parties established in 1989/90. The materials are preserved, catalogued and made accessible – documenting protest, change and democratisation.
The Gerda Taro School is a grammar school run by the City of Leipzig. Democracy education plays a central role and is explored in greater depth through numerous activities across all subjects.
