Fils de Créa designed the light and sound installation Passage especially for the Leipzig Festival of Lights – an oversized passageway six metres wide and around four metres high, symbolising boundaries and their opening. Passage consisted of about 500 recycled lamps and lights. They were intended to reflect the diversity and experiences of those involved in 1989. With its colour, visual and sound aesthetics, the installation sought to invite visitors to the Leipzig Festival of Lights on a journey of remembrance. The lights had been collected in advance of the Leipzig Festival of Lights. This resulted in a wide variety of different types, shapes and colours of lamps. In addition, one hundred pieces featuring a Leipzig motif were used in Passage. These were lamps with a sculptural relief, known as lithophanes. What made them special was that they were produced using 3D printing by the Leipzig-based company Glashaus 3D GmbH from bioplastic. Their production involved PLA polymers (lactic acid), which are made from renewable, food-safe and recyclable raw materials. Although this made the lamps biodegradable and compostable, they were far from reaching the end of their lifespan after the Leipzig Festival of Lights; instead, they were sold and further used. No waste is generated during the production of the lamps, and 14 trees were planted as CO2 compensation. A sound composed of archive recordings from the 9ᵗʰ of October 1989, sound effects and music completed the installation.
