The interactive installation Barrier consisted of nineteen vertical beams of light referencing the Iron Curtain. The beams of light formed a barrier that reacted to touch – allowing visitors of the Leipzig Festival of Lights to move and open it. In its normal state, the beams remained connected like a curtain until an opening was created by pushing the curtain aside. This created the feeling of physically breaking through a boundary. At first, the barrier still blocked the view. Then it became possible to glimpse what had previously been hidden. The catch: as soon as the visitors to the Leipzig Festival of Lights withdrew, the curtain closed again. The message: dismantling barriers requires constant effort and activity. The more people tried together to push the beams of light aside, the better it worked – and the curtain of light dissolved into a play of light made of flowers.
