What do Jyvaskyla (Finland), Eindhoven (Netherlands), Lyon (France) and Leipzig have in common? Light, of course, but also creativity, cooperation and sustainability. These cities, all of which host a light festival and are members of the LUCI network, were involved in implementing the participatory, multidisciplinary and European project “Beacon of Hope – Lighthouse of Hope”.
Craig Morrison was the lead artist, working closely with local teams on every part of the installation. The aim: to create a unique element of the artwork each time, one that is typical of the venue and its residents. This has now also happened in Leipzig, the fourth stop of “Beacon”. The central structure was made of wood, a readily available raw material that absorbs CO2, unlike aluminium or steel, which produce greenhouse gases during their manufacture. Added to this were the Leipzig components: umbrellas as a symbol of various revolutionary movements, including the one in Hong Kong; contemporary and historical messages from Leipzig, placed on banners, ribbons, audio messages and the umbrellas; developed and designed, among others, with journalists in the residency programme of the European Centre for Press and Media Freedom (ECPMF), the Youth Parliament, Mütterzentrum Leipzig and DHL employees. Live performances by poetry slammer Nils Straatmann completed the co-creation.
Craig Morrison worked on “Beacon of Hope” with Ant Dickinson, who also coordinated its realisation in Leipzig.
