“The question is often: Who is inside, who is outside?”
A walk-in rotunda with dynamic lighting, around 10 metres in diameter and just under three metres high, awaited the visitors of the Leipzig Festival of Lights on Burgplatz. Its interior was completely covered with 450 reflective balloons that mirrored both the light of the video projection and the visitors themselves. The outside of the rotunda was fitted with 1400 white latex balloons that blurred the low-resolution video. Visitors were able to choose and change their position – the image, the perspective was always different; they could step inside or outside. After all, this is often the question: Who is inside, who is outside? Am I included or excluded? The interplay of refraction, reflection and distortion never showed the viewers as they really were and confronted them with the question: On which side do I stand? Ring thus played with space and atmospheric perception, focusing on the immersive experience of the visitors. The space and materials invited them almost playfully to explore the installation, to engage with it, and to create new images of themselves through reflections and other effects.
Three of the twelve panels in total were designed by local cooperation partners using recycled transparent or reflective materials, thus referring to the subtitle do/undo/redo.
