On 16 September 2019, the third of six Light Spaces on the way to the Leipzig Festival of Lights opened behind the opera in the park at Schwanenteich.
In this Light Space, the focus was on dance – in two ways at once: both the ensemble of 60 pupils from the Gerda Taro School Leipzig and the Leipzig Ballet performed in the light. At Schwanenteich, dance became a mediator of democratic values and made memories tangible. The pupils’ dance piece was titled “Sommer ’89”, while “Join In!” was the production by Ballet Director Mario Schröder.
Sommer ’89 – a dance piece
As an intro, Sommer ’89 explored the tension between the historical background of the period of change in 1989/90 and the current refugee movements since 2015. The choreography questioned reasons for fleeing as well as state structures and their foreign policies. What is freedom? Why do borders exist? And what are their consequences? In the “School Dances 2019” competition in Dresden, the 60 pupils of the Gerda Taro School won 3rd place with this piece.
