At the Goerdeler Monument at the New Town Hall, on 30 September the Youth Choir of Oper Leipzig opened the fifth of six light spaces on the way to the Leipzig Festival of Lights.

Choreography “Truth or Dare” by the Youth Choir of the Opera

To open Light Space 5, the Youth Choir of the Opera presented the staged choreography “Truth or Dare”. It was meant to be a surprise party. They had passed their A-levels. The summer night was wonderfully warm. Plenty of reasons to celebrate with joy! It was the last time the class met, as they would soon scatter in all directions. Suddenly, a message in a bottle appeared. Not a treasure map, not a love letter, but a time document from the former GDR. From that moment on, the party took a different turn …

As an intro, the Leipzig Youth Parliament performed a statement on “Now or never – Democracy!”

Thirty years after the Peaceful Revolution, many young people knew this momentous event mainly from history lessons. What did it mean to live in the GDR as a young person? What happened to people who did not conform but expressed their own opinions?

For young people in a liberal-democratic society, these are reflections from another time. Nevertheless, even today we find abuse of power, manipulation and injustice in our society. Only now – we can become politically and socially active! These socio-political questions were posed by the Youth Choir of the Opera with the scenic choreography Truth or Dare.
