The path of light guides visitors to the festival of lights from St. Nicholas Church, the starting point of the Peaceful Revolution, across the Neumarkt to Wilhelm-Leuschner-Platz, the future site of the Leipzig Freedom and Unity Monument.

At Schillerpark the traditional Candles-89 will be illuminated by visitors using tea lights throughout the evening. Candles are available free of charge at all candle and information stands in the city center.

Peace Prayer | St. Nicholas Church

“Accept one another...” (Romans 15:7)

Sermon: Nikolai parish priest Bernhard Stief

The peace prayers at St. Nicholas Church in Leipzig and the Peaceful Revolution of 1989 are inextricably linked. Once upon a time, participants in the peace prayers took the message of nonviolence to the streets, thus contributing to a peaceful end to the GDR dictatorship. In this spirit, the Monday "Services in the Everyday Life of the World" continue to encourage people to advocate and pray for nonviolent and peaceful coexistence. In the 35th year of German reunification, we examine what still divides us and, in the peace prayer, seek a common stance toward peace. The sermon will be delivered by St. Nicholas Parish Priest Bernhard Stief, who has accompanied the peace prayers at St. Nicholas Church since 2008. The Berlin singer-songwriter Max Prosa, whose direct songs touch and captivate listeners, will provide musical inspiration.

Speech on Democracy | St. Nicholas Church

The award-winning author, theater director, and playwright Nino Haratischwili will deliver the speech on democracy in St. Nicholas Church on October 9. Born in Tbilisi in 1983, Nino Haratischwili is one of the most important voices in contemporary German-language literature. Her awards include the Literature Prize of the Cultural Circle of German Business, the Anna Seghers Prize, and the Bertolt Brecht Prize. Her international breakthrough came with the epic "The Eighth Life (For Brilka)." Her work is characterized by powerful language and an intense exploration of history and identity. The speech will be accompanied by musical contributions from the pianist, singer, and composer Nestan Bagration-Davitashvili.
