Ode to Democracy

Project by the partner city Frankfurt am Main

Multimedia production

at the Evangelical Reformed Church, Tröndlinring 7

**Project by the twin city of Frankfurt am Main, Atelier Markgraph (concept), ZORN x Jasna Fritzi Bauer (text selection), bright! Studios (video, motion design)**

What defines democracy? What are the challenges, and where do the opportunities lie? These questions were at the heart of the *Ode to Democracy*, which was first presented in Frankfurt am Main in 2023 as part of the celebrations marking the 175th anniversary of the St Paul’s Church Constitution. For the 35th anniversary of the Peaceful Revolution, this project by the twin city of Frankfurt was adapted for Leipzig. With the call “We are looking for your poem”, citizens were invited by the artist duo ZORN x Jasna Fritzi Bauer to contribute their thoughts on democracy. The curated texts were projected onto the façade of the Evangelical Reformed Church during the Leipzig Festival of Lights and complemented by additional visual effects and sound. The result was a multimedia production that transformed the abstract nature of the democratic principle into an emotional, immersive experience that invited reflection.

Frankfurt am Main has been a twin city of Leipzig since 3 October 1990.

“Leipzig and Frankfurt am Main have been closely linked by a city friendship agreement since 3 October 1990, and both stand firmly for democracy and freedom. Following the outstanding project by Leipzig’s Cockpit Collective, ‘Democracy Calling’, as part of our Paulskirchenfest in May 2023 to mark the 175th anniversary of the German National Assembly, we are all the more delighted that we can now, in return, further develop ‘Ode to Democracy’, a project created in Frankfurt, for our twin city Leipzig and present it as part of the Leipzig Festival of Lights.”
