FREEDOM?

Loomaland

Light installation
-------------------

at the Richard Wagner Monument, Goerdelerring \| for Leipzig Festival of Lights XXL on Burgplatz

At first glance, the installation *FREEDOM?* appeared like a random arrangement of light streaks in the space: a delicate, three-dimensional illuminated Mikado. In fact, *FREEDOM?* was a so-called anamorphosis, in which an image could only be recognised from a very specific angle. Only from the correct line of sight did the profound question of *FREEDOM?* emerge.

In this way, the installation symbolised the fragility of all the movable parts that had to come together for freedom to be born in one night and in one place. The question mark, however, formed a bridge to the present: freedom was not a permanent state but had to be continually re-established and questioned. The installation consisted of LED steles placed freely within the space.

Künstlerduo Loomaland – Florian Giefer und Denis Bivour

Behind the label **Loomaland** are the two visual artists **Denis Bivour** and **Florian Giefer**. In the autumn of 89, they were teenagers and lived in both parts of Germany. Today, they live and work in Berlin. Since 2018, Giefer and Bivour have collaborated as an artist duo on various projects, including their acclaimed “Electric Swan Ensemble”, which has been presented since 2020 in Berlin, London, Manchester, Paris and Lucerne, among other places. At the Leipzig Festival of Lights 2021 they thrilled audiences with the installation 89 Voices. Bivour and Giefer aim to challenge habitual ways of seeing with their installations and firmly believe that technology always needs a little magic to captivate people with their works.
