Democracy Needs Colour – Spray Along!

Cart’1 & Matthieu Tercieux

Digital Graffiti and Performance
--------------------------------

on Richard-Wagner-Platz

**Participate, get involved, join in** – that was the motto on the 9ᵗʰ of October 2022 at Richard-Wagner-Platz.

Digital graffiti, also known as **“Light Spray”**, is an interactive art form created through the collaboration between **digital artist Matthieu Tercieux** and **street artist Cart’1**. Using elements from the world of video games, Cart’1 generated graffiti projections with a Wii controller, creating effects similar to spraying with an aerosol can. In preparation, the artists worked with young people from Leipzig to realise the project on a large scale at Richard-Wagner-Platz. Visitors to the Leipzig Festival of Lights were able to become active participants themselves and use Light Spray to transform the **facades at Richard-Wagner-Platz** with their own messages. In between, there were **graffiti performances** by **Cart’1**. DJ dørbystarr provided the matching sound.

Lichtfest Leipzig 2022: die Künstler Cart’1 und Matthieu Tercieux aus Lyon, Frankreich

The street artist **Cart’1** is a travelling artist who often works internationally, but he is based in Lyon. Cart’1, born in 1974, has been doing graffiti since he was 15. His world is populated by dreamlike figures, mostly sprayed in black and white. They integrate themselves into the places where he paints, like living beings that disrupt the real world.

**Matthieu Tercieux**, also from Lyon and a graduate of the Mulhouse School of Art, sees himself as a programming artist. His focus lies on connecting street art with technology. He aims to develop projects that allow maximum interaction with the audience. Tercieux works for various international festivals, creating and programming interactive scenographies.
