In 2021, the Leipzig Festival of Lights presented itself with a **new, decentralised concept**. The most important change: instead of being held exclusively on Augustusplatz as before, the Festival of Lights took place in 2021 at several locations within the inner city ring, where light installations could be experienced **from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.**. It was also new that there was no stage programme. Visitors could therefore use the entire evening to visit all installations and the candles' podium '89 in any order. The **candles' podium '89**, traditionally illuminated by visitors, was located on the **St Nicolas Church Yard**. There, at **7 p.m.**, short **greetings** with musical accompaniment were given. As in the previous year, the people of Leipzig were once again able to symbolically take on candle sponsorships.

Greetings, music, candles' podium '89

Das Lichtfest Leipzig 2021 wurde auf dem Nikolaikirchhof von Oberbürgermeister Burkhard Jung zusammen mit Ehrengästen, darunter Vitali Klitschko, Gisela Kallenbach und Michael Kretschmer eröffnet

Brief **words of greeting** from Lord Mayor Burkhard Jung and other distinguished guests, including Vitali Klitschko, Mayor of Kyiv, Leipzig’s partner city, Gisela Kallenbach, civil rights activist in the former GDR, and Michael Kretschmer, Minister-President of Saxony, marked the start of the evening on St Nicolas Church Yard and accompanied the lighting of the candles' podium '89. The words of greeting were also transmitted to an LED screen at the market square. On St Nicolas Church Yard, a simultaneous translation of the words of greeting into sign language was provided.

The Canella Trio Leipzig (Magdalena Steinberg, cello; Anna-Katharina Reuter, transverse flute; Felicitas Ressel, clarinet) provided the **musical accompaniment**.

Over the course of the evening, the traditional **candles' podium '89** was illuminated by visitors with thousands of tea lights. Most of the tea lights used were supplied by the Leipzig start-up NatürLicht. At all information stands in the city centre, visitors received candles free of charge.
